Since 1999,the GreaterGood Network has donated more than $20 million dollars to charities across the country and around the world,with grants distributed through GreaterGood.org, an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
I have a link to The Literacy Site on the right of this website. It's linked to five other urgent causes: hunger, breast cancer, child health, animal welfare, and the rain forest. All you have to do is click on a particular site, and sponsors make a donation pertaining to that cause.
ALSO, each site has a fun gift shop with items that are reasonably priced and support these good causes as well. I've enjoyed purchasing several of them as gifts - kind of a way to "give twice."
