My artsyletters booth at a recent art show; Jessica tries out my old typewriter as Wyatt and my daughter Morgan look on.
I'm enjoying a creative start to 2013 after a busy fall. In addition to writing, I've recently launched
artsyletters, "art for your literary side." In my
Etsy shop, I have original drawings and prints, note cards, book marks, altered page collages and more - a gathering of gifts for readers and writers! If you have a moment, check it out - and thanks!
We had a great 2013
SCBWI Southern Breeze Springmingle in Atlanta!
I was thrilled to meet Katherine Jacobs (top) editor at Roaring Brook, who worked on THE ARROW FINDS IT MARK. Also, what a treat to participate in a novel intensive with Nikki Grimes (bottom) and hear her sessions about poetry.
We also had a wonderful
SCBWI Southern Breeze wik
(Writing and Illustrating for Kids) conference in October, and I'm looking forward to several opportunities to gather with writers and illustrators this year.I'm still appreciating a couple of great workshops last year.
First, it was my third Highlights Founders Workshop up near Honesdale, Pennsylvania - at the other end of the Appalachian mountains from here and with the terrific Highlights folks. (Here's my
blog post about it.)
Second, we had an enthusastic group of 14 who spent a weekend in Birmingham, Ala., for Hester Bass's fantastic "Show Don't Tell" retreat. (And here's my
blog post with a wee bit more about that!)

Meeting up with friends old and new: Stephanie Moody, EJ Stapler, Georgia Book Award winner Jody Feldman, Claudia Pearson, Paula B. Puckett, Georgia Picture Book Award winner Meghan McCarthy, and yours truly.
I enjoyed presenting a "Haiku How-To" workshop at the
43rd Annual Children's Literature Conference at the University of Georgia in Athens last spring. What an incredible line-up of speakers, including Barbara O'Connor, Carole Boston Weatherford, and Mike Wimmer. Several of us SCBWI Southern Breezers enjoyed catching up with book award winners Barbara O'Connor and Megan McCarthy.

Springmingling and More!
We recently enjoyed a fabulous SCBWI Southern Breeze Springmingle in Atlanta! We always have a magical mix of speakers and attendees.
Our
20th Anniversary SCBWI Southern Breeze Springmingle, , which I coordinated Feb. 24-26, 2012, in Atlanta, was a blast as well!
Robyn Hood Black (yes, that's her real name) is the author of
Sir Mike, a rhyming Rookie Reader from Scholastic's Children's Press, and
WOLVES, a nonfiction, interactive vault book from Intervisual Books. Two of her poems appear in Georgia Heard's anthology of found poems,
The Arrow Finds Its Mark, from Roaring Brook Press. Two more are in
The Poetry Friday Anthology and another two in
The Poetry Friday Anthology for Middle School, compiled by Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell (Pomelo Books). Her fiction has appeared in
Highlights, and her poetry has appeared in
Ladybug,
Hopscotch for Girls and
Berry Blue Haiku (which also featured her artwork) . Her work appears in leading haiku journals, including
Frogpond, Acorn, and
Modern Haiku.
Robyn began writing stories and drawing pictures while growing up in Orlando, Florida. Editor of her elementary school newspaper, she later graduated
cum laude as a
Phi Beta Kappa English major from Furman University.
Her smartest move was getting involved with the
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She coordinated the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012
Springmingle, the SCBWI Southern Breeze spring conference in Atlanta. She coordinated a poetry retreat featuring Rebecca Kai Dotlich in June 2011. Robyn is thankful for great critique group friends who are insightful, fun, and supportive. And they make yummy food.
Robyn taught middle school English for two years before diving into writing full-time with the publication of
Sir Mike. She now enjoys sharing her passions for writing and art through school visits and presenatations for all ages in community, festival, and professional settings. She also creates "art for your literary side" through her new business,
artsyletters.
She and her husband of 28 years are proud parents of a daughter in college and a son in high school. As animal-loving vegetarians, the family shares life with an assortment of dogs and cats. Robyn has volunteered with wolves and other animals at a local wildlife preserve.
Animals, the endeavors of her children, and memories of her own childhood are primary influences in her writing and art. She thanks God for the opportunity to participate in the gifts of love and creativity.
Poring through picture books at a library or bookstore is still a favorite, magical activity. Her two favorite books on writing are Brenda Ueland's
If You Want to Write and Nancy Willard's
Telling Time.
"I like to share this quote from Brenda Ueland with kids and adults alike," Robyn says. "Everybody is talented, original, and has something important to say."
HIGHLIGHTS FOUNDERS Advanced Illustrators Worskhop in August 2011: our first session was led by the remarkable and ever-entertaining Eric Rohman. We had to make a relief print school picture of a pig which somehow reflected our personality. This is pretty much how I felt among all the talent in that room - faculty and attendees alike!
