Thanks to Lakeview Academy in Gainesville, Ga., for hosting me to kick off the Lower School's "Writing Celebration" last week. Students of all ages have been learning and polishing their writing skills all year, and this year's celebration theme was "Capturing Ideas" - with the perfect visual of spring butterflies, fluttering all around the writing displays.
After presentations to all of the lower school students Tuesday, I returned Wednesday to work with Mrs. Briggs's and Mrs. Smith's terrific fourth-graders in a writing workshop. If ideas were butterflies, then we had whole flocks of them in the media center! What an enthusiastic and talented group.
Also last week, I judged poetry for the Hall County Middle School Writing Contest. I won't give away any surprises, but I was impressed with many of these finalist entries. Narrowing down many good poems into a few winning slots was a challenge. A few did rise to the top, however, because of their original take on subject matter and their lyrical, humorous, or striking language.
Congratulations to all these students - keep writing!
