As many of you know, our SCBWI Southern Breeze region and the world in general lost a living treasure with the passing of Liz Conrad on Wednesday. Elizabeth Dulemba has posted a beautiful tribute on her blog. If you scroll through the comments there, http://dulemba.com/2009/08/in-memoriam-liz-conrad.html , you'll begin to get an idea of how special Liz was Read More

School Visits - in the summer?
July 27, 2009
I'm looking forward to spending the day with the Primrose Suwanee West students tomorrow! In addition to preschoolers, elementary-age students are there for the summer program. I'm honored to be sharing stories and writing workshops with them. They found me through the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve website, so I met them up at the Preserve for a field trip. Stories happen year-round! :0) Read More
Big ol' Snakes and Exploding Trees...
July 15, 2009
Hmmm... a little long between posts? Apologies! The hum of summer and unexpected visits from Mother Nature have interrupted my schedule.
We've been playing host to some unwelcome guests in our fenced-in back yard - copperheads! All three dogs have had encounters, but only one had the sense to stay out of strike range. I'm happy to report the other two are doing fine after overnight stays (just over a week apart) at the after-hours emergency animal clinic. Read More

Andy Runton and OWLY
June 2, 2009
When I think of the little wren family, or other wild guests in my own back yard, I think of the talented and wonderful Andy Runton. Do you know him?
He's the creator of the OWLY series of graphic novels, and he watches birds, rabbits, butterflies - you name it! - right here in Georgia. Read More

And they're off....
May 27, 2009
Leaving so soon?
This morning, the wren babies peeped outside of the nest (ducking back in if they saw me), then hopped out just before noon, then flew around the patio and into the trees on the other side of the fence. Mama and Papa supervised the whole affair, continuing to supply bugs and chirps and directions, I'm sure.

Summer peeps
May 25, 2009
First, time to pause a moment in gratitude to those who serve our country and to honor the memories of those who died while doing so.
I've also been pausing to watch the beautiful drama just outside my back door: five baby Carolina wrens who are growing fatter and more feathery by the day. A month ago they were just speckled eggs! Mama and Papa Wren keep up nearly constant flight paths through the back yard to supply bugs and grubs to their peeping brood. Must be agreeing with them! (Photos at left)

Happy almost-the-end-of-the School Year!
I'm attempting to show off a few examples of some great student work on a new page on my website: Student Gallery. (See tab above.)
With recent upgrades to my website hosting service, there have been some glitches in uploading pictures the last day or so, but these issues are being resolved. Thanks for patience in the meantime.

Marvelous Maysville Elementary
May 6, 2009
Thanks, too, to all the great folks at Maysville Elementary School for a terrific visit! Media Specialist Sara Mixon went all out to provide the school's first "Cultural Arts Week," and I was honored to participate.
What an imaginative bunch of kids! Thanks for all the hugs and howls. :0)
