just a number
rainwater seeps into
my boots

Love "just a number" as mine is quite big this year!!! Haha. The boots, the boots... today I got goose poop on mine! Still waterproof, tho!

Robyn, am I way, way, way off? When I read "just a number" and then pictured the rain seeping into boots, I pictured a soldier or a Marine. Maybe one of my husband's stories was also fresh in my mind? I love reading various interpretations of a short, image-packed piece. Congrats on the recent publication, and congrats to bottle rockets. I must go subscribe!

Hi, Karen - Oh, your comment gave me chills. In a good way. I had not thought of that interpretation at all (as just about all of my haiku originate from my own personal experience), but that's something I love about the form - the juxtaposition of the two images in a haiku can resonate in so many different ways for folks. Thank you so much for sharing that, and gratitude to your husband for his service. (My hubby, a psychiatrist, worked with Marines for 10 years at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, SC, before he changed jobs to teach residents here in the Upstate. He loved it.)
